Possibly the most dangerous manoeuvre to carry out, if carried out at the wrong time and place!

Areas where you especially should NOT be overtaking

Staggered junction ahead
Crossroads ahead
Dual carriageway ends
Double bend ahead
Junction on a bend
Both Lanes Narrow Ahead
Junction on the left ahead
Junction on the right ahead
No Overtaking

Possibly the most dangerous because it could put you directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

* Dealt with at the right time, in the right place, with all hazard routines covered first, it can be simple and uneventful.
* Is there a heavy flow of traffic up ahead?
* Are there junctions ahead?
* Are there solid white lines up ahead on at the section of road you are on?
* Are there bends up ahead?
* Can you clearly see along the road?
* Are you only going to gain the car In front’s space and then be held up by other vehicles again?
* If there are just one or two cars in front of you and then clear road for miles ahead then maybe an overtake may be useful to your journey time, especially if    the cars up ahead are travelling much lower than the roads speed limit.
* Before attempting the manoeuvre, the road ahead MUST be clear!!!!! And not “just clear”, it needs to be clear enough for you to pull out, accelerate, pass      the cars you want to overtake, and then move back to the left lane when you can see the car that you have overtaken in your rear-view mirror. You must do        this without causing another vehicle to change speed or direction.
* When you have made the decision to overtake, complete the hazard routine, drop down to a lower gear (to give you additional power), indicate to show        your intentions, pull out and keep power on until you have passed and pulled back into the left lane.

The routine for Overtaking

  1. Once you have decided and overtake is safe to carry out. Carry out the MSPSGL routine
  2. Signal to show your intentions.
  3. Lower your gear to give additional power to carry out the manoeuvre in less time. Keeping the car in a higher gear will take time to build additional speed therefore requiring a longer distance to pass the vehicle you are overtaking.
  4. Ensure you are well clear of the vehicle you are overtaking before signalling back to the left lane and pulling back in.
