Irrelevant of the driving test, driver's should have a good understanding of their vehicles controls.

This in turn will ensure they know what to do wand where to locate them when necessary, and will give them the ability to spot things that are not quite what they should be and possibly how to react accordingly to resolve any issue or get the issue fixed.

1. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would lower and close your door window.

If you have electric window controls.
Without taking your eyes off the roads, feel for the electric window switches and simply lower and raise your door window.

If you have manual window winders.
Without taking your eyes off the roads, feel for the window winder and simply lower and raise your door window.

2. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would operate the horn.

Check that there are no vehicles or pedestrians around you and simply press the horn.

3. When it is safe to do so, can you shown me how you would set the rear demister.

When driving in a straight line, take a very quick glance as to the position of the rear demister switch so that your brain knows its location, and simply press the switch.
Becoming familiar with the climate controls and the location of the buttons is crucial to ensuring you spend less time taking your eyes off the road if you need to use them. 


4. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would demist the front windscreen.

You must demonstrate that you can switch on the air blower to the windscreen section of the car.
Some vehicles also have heated front screens, you could mention that you would use that as well as the blower. 

5. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash and wipe the front windscreen.

Wait until you are driving in a straight line and simply wash and wipe the front windscreen for a couple of seconds.
Ensure you are confident where the front and rear wash lever is and how it works. 



6. When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash and wipe the rear windscreen.

Wait until you are driving in a straight line and simply wash and wipe the rear windscreen for a couple of seconds.
Ensure you are confident where the front and rear wash lever is and how it works. 

7. When it is safe do so, can you show me how you would switch on the dipped beam lights.

When driving in a straight line literally switch on the dipped beam lights. If you need to look down to locate the switch, then do this very briskly just so your brain knows where it is and then feel for it to switch it on. Do not keep looking for it as you will possibly veer into the kerb or into oncoming traffic. It is extremely dangerous to take your eyes off the road!
