Vary from road to road and from vehicle to vehicle.
Ensure you know what your vehicle can do on what roads.

Speed limits are limits NOT targets.

1. Check what vehicle you are driving.
2. Check what type of road you are on.
3.Stick within those limits and you'll be fine.

The most common way to work out what the speed limit is for the road you are on.

1. Does the road you are on have Streetlights on it?
If it does then it's best to think 30mph straight away.
Now you have put that in your brain, the second stage would be to look further along the road at those street lights to see whether any of those street lights have any speed limit signs on them.
The speed limit signs will be staggered to the left and right of the road and are known as repeater signs.
Generally, nowadays most roads that are 30mph do not have 30mph speed limit signs on them, as the streetlights tend to be a given that the road you are on is a 30mph. If the road carried a higher speed than 30mph there should be repeater signs regularly along the road on the street lights.

If a road has a limit of 20mph, it would usually carry some form of traffic calming measures as well, such as speed cushions, chicanes, narrowings or road humps, and will also usually have huge 20mph markings painted on the road's surface.

40mph and 50mph road will always have repeater signs on them.

National speed limit roads will have a national speed limit sign placed at the start of the limit and no further repeaters along the stretch of road.
National speed limit roads (60mph) do not usually have street lights, but roads which have no streetlights are not necessarily all national speed limit roads.
If they have no streetlights but are 40mph or 50mph roads they will have repeater signs along the entirety of the road where those limits are in place.

Specified Dual Carriageways carry various speed limits depending on what type of vehicle you are driving along with Motorways.
Motorways are noticeable by Blue signs and may have 2,3,4,or 5 lanes

NEVER RELY ON WHAT A SAT NAV SAYS on it's screen. A sat nav is only as good as it's latest upload, and that upload could be months old.
Always rely on what you can physically see around you.

Speed Limit Signs that have a red circle around them means that this is the MAXIMUM speed permissible on that section of road.
Speed Limit Signs that are not bounded by a red circle are advisory speed limits.

The picture above relates to change of speed zones.

If you are on a 30mph road going into a 40mph road, you cannot begin to increase you speed until you have passed the two 40mph signs.
Likewise if you are on a 40mph heading towards a change of speed zone stating 30mph, you must be at 30mph before passing the signs.

This rule applies to all change of speed zones as shown below.
