Very easy to do, very easy to fail your driving test doing.

What could be easier than just pulling you car up alongside the kerb on the right hand side of the road, then reverse it at least two car lengths, and then rejoin the left lane and drive on?

Well, a lot of learners have trouble with this and fail their driving test.
So let's talk about the process to make why faults/fails get recorded .

Pulling up on the right routine

4 simple stages

The routine

1. Carry out the MSPSGL routine.
2. Give way to oncoming vehicles.
3. When safe to do so move over to the kerb ensuring you leave a reasonable gap between your car and the kerb.
4. It is advisable to travel for a little distance to ensure that your car is parallel with the kerb and that your steering is straight.
5. Bring the car to a stop, secure the car and cancel your signal indicator.
6. You will now be asked to reverse the car at least 2 car lengths in a straight line keeping reasonably close to the kerb.
7. Before moving, carry out a full 360degree sweep to ensure it is safe to start reversing.
8. Very slowly, reverse the car while keeping effective observations. These observations MUST be everywhere.
This includes, Ahead, behind, to the left and right side of your car, this includes over your right shoulder looking for any potential driveways or pedestrians on the pavement.
9. Depending on the width of the road it may be necessary for you to stop for oncoming vehicles and continue with the manoeuvre once these vehicles have passed you. REMEMBER! if you cause another vehicle to change speed or direction it could result in a serious fault being recorded.
This does not mean that you must stop for oncoming vehicles, but it up to you to decide whether, based on the circumstances, you would impact another road user.
10. Once you have finished reversing the two car lengths, secure the car, select neutral, and wait for further instructions from the examiner.

NOTE! if at any stage during the reverse manoeuvre you feel that your tyre might touch or mount the kerb, or the car is moving towards the centre of the road, you are permitted to select first gear, move the car forward and straighten it up, then reselect reverse and continue to your required instruction of reversing two car lengths. If you go back further than the two car lengths you will not be given a fault, the examiner will just ask you to stop.

11. Having carried out the required move, and secured the car the examiner will ask you to rejoin the left hand side of the road and drive on.
12. Select first gear, carry out a 360degree full sweep of your car, It is recommended to start the sweep from the right hand side of the car first, finishing your final check before moving off at the left side rear of your car, as this is where you biggest area of danger will be based on your line of sight. If you have to wait for vehicles coming up from behind you before moving off, then carry out an additional rear view check over your left shoulder before the wheels begin to turn.
13. Signal if it is necessary and someone may benefit from it.

Some of the most common faults/fails
for this manoeuvre.

1. Not carrying out the MSPSGL routine and affecting other road users.
2. Pulling over to the right in front of an oncoming vehicle causing them to brake or take evasive action to avoid you.
3. Mounting the pavement or hitting the kerb hard when moving over to the right.
4. Not carrying out any effective observations before reversing or at all throughout the manoeuvre.
5. Not checking over your right shoulder during the reverse section.
6. Mounting the pavement during the reverse section.
7. Moving out into the centre of the road during the reverse section and being totally unaware you are doing it, which may impact an oncoming vehicle from either direction.
8. Rejoining the left hand side of the road without any effective observations before moving off, or causing another road user to change speed or direction while doing so.
